Unlike pay-per-click (PPC) advertising such as Google AdWords™ which are ads that appear in the "sponsored links" section of search engine results, search engine optimization (SEO) will improve a website's "organic search rank" (i.e., the position of a website in search results). Organic results are clicked much more often than sponsored links. So not only do you tend to get more traffic from an investment in SEO, but your ranking doesn't go away after you've exhausted your ad budget for the day as with PPC.
There are situations, however, where PPC might beta good first step in internet marketing. SEO tends to take longer to see results. PPC is also useful for short-term promotions or when testing out keywords for optimizing a website.
